Resilient Bar Ceiling and Wall 45mm x 16mm x 3.0m - 50 Length Pack
What is a Resilient Bar?
Soundproofing a wall or ceiling can feel overwhelming, but resilient bars—also known as resilient channels—remain one of the most effective and affordable solutions available today. By decoupling plasterboard from the main building structure, resilient bars drastically reduce the transmission of sound vibrations, making them ideal for homes, studios, offices, and refurbishment projects. In this guide, we’ll break down exactly how resilient bars work, where to use them, how to install them, and why they are essential for achieving high-quality acoustic performance.
Resilient bars, also known as resilient channels, are specialised metal strips designed to dramatically improve sound insulation in walls, ceilings, and partitions. They do this by creating a flexible separation between plasterboard and the underlying timber or metal framework which significantly reduces the direct transmission of sound vibrations, helping homeowners, builders, and contractors achieve superior acoustic performance with minimal structural changes. They are engineered for both residential and commercial applications and they are an affordable and highly effective solution for reducing airborne noise such as voices, TV sound, and traffic, as well as impact noise from footsteps or vibrations.
Resilient Bars are easy to install and compatible with most drywall systems, they are commonly used in home theaters, studios, apartment conversions, and refurbishment projects where enhanced soundproofing is essential. When combined with acoustic insulation, soundproof plasterboard, and high-quality fixings, resilient bars form a powerful noise-control system that meets modern building regulations and provides long-lasting results. Whether you’re upgrading a noisy room or planning a full acoustic build, resilient bars offer a proven way to maximise sound isolation without increasing wall or ceiling thickness unnecessarily.
They are manufactured from high-quality galvanised steel and are also an excellent solution for meeting Part E Building Regulations for soundproofing in new builds and conversions.
How are Resilient Bars used?
Resilient Bar Ceilings- When a Resilient Bar is used for ceilings, the bars are fixed at right angles to the underside of the joists as close to the perimeter of the room as possible without touching the walls, at 450mm centres (400mm centres for 2.4m boards) using the pre-drilled holes and appropriate screws, ensuring that the screws penetrate the resilient bar by at least 10mm. If the resilient bar is to be joined, ensure that an overlap of 200mm occurs over a joist and then screw through both pieces of resilient bar to secure them. Fix plasterboard with long edges at right angles to the resilient bar, where two layers of plaster boards are required stagger the joints of the outer layer and fix short edges to resilient bar. For maximum acoustic performance ensure that the screws do not come into contact with the joists.
Resilient Bar Walls- When Resilient Bars are used for walls they should be mounted at 600mm centres horizontally from floor to ceiling with the 21mm pre-drilled side at the bottom. Should the resilient bar need cutting this should be done with tin snips or a hacksaw, and they can be overlapped by at least 200mm over a batten and then fixed in place screwing through both pieces of resilient bar with the appropriate screw. When securing the plasterboard it is crucial that the screws only penetrate the 45mm face and do not touch the resilient bar supports or battens so that the acoustic performance is not compromised.
